Gunman hijacks Delta jet lands in Cuba with 109 aboard

A gunman wearing a white cowboy hat hijacks Delta Flight 43 from Tampa to Miami, holding a stewardess at gunpoint in the cockpit. After a five hour detour to Havana the jet returns to Miami leaving the hijacker in Cuba while Cuban authorities review his asylum request. Passengers recount the tense episode as pilots avoided confrontation and the aircraft was escorted by MIG fighters.

Beating death leads to three arrests in Kersey area

In Marys Pa AP two men and a woman were charged with murder in the beating death of 81 year old Oral D Maurer at his lonely farm house near Kersey. James Guido 24 Jerome Singer 21 and Bernadette Rigard 22 were arraigned before a justice of the peace and jailed pending a preliminary hearing. The victim was found Feb 8 after police say he was beaten in an apparent robbery attempt and later died after brain surgery.

Downtown Study Presses Parking Authority on Survey

At a noontime meeting in the Hotel Corry the City Parking Authority moved to clear the air over a proposed survey of the downtown shopping area. The long stalled upgrading program has circulated drawings to civic bodies including City Council.

An unknown robber stole $250 from the Juniata College bank on campus in Huntingdon. The crime was discovered at 7:40 a.m. by bank director Robert Fisher. Police are investigating with state and local authorities.

Corry Memorial Hospital approves long term care addition plans

The hospital board approves long term care expansion costing about 35 500 with major costs for basement public toilet installations. Tiles will be replaced and new tile installed in the kitchen area. Emergency room will not handle cases requiring explosive gas, with special flooring and switches to be added.

U S planes hit the Hanoi radio station that broadcasts Communist propaganda while monitors report it stayed on air. A separate rocket attack area southwest of Hanoi targets military storage as US air and ground actions escalate in the lunar new year offensive. American combat casualties reach a weekly high with 4 547 wounded and 43 killed.

A report shows $529,101 paid on the Corry Memorial Hospital addition, about 59.8 percent of costs. January receipts include $225,000 borrowed and $24,000 from reserves, with $138,402 from the state and $137,700 notes cleared. The balance at local banks stands at $4,793, and pledges total $354,389 with $172,493 collected. Monthly activity includes paid amounts to contractors and balances for architect, plumbing, heating, electrical and other categories.

Corry Weighs State Aid for Recreation Land Funds

Corry may tap remaining Project 700 funds for land acquisition with a 50 50 state and city match and possible use of Project 500 for expansion and development. State officials said totals are not yet fixed though Corry’s existing partnership with the school district aids eligibility. Continued details promised on page five.

Five Hurt In Two Car Crash At Lowville

Five people were injured in a two car collision at the Route 8 and 69 intersection in Lowville. Alan Maine, 15, Mohawk, was hospitalized with head lacerations and body bruises. Others treated and released included Mrs. Maine 43, Mrs. Maine 27, Richard Maine 27, and Mrs. Steverangle 55 Brockway. Total damage estimated at 1600 dollars.

Corry Man Named By Cancer Group

George Sample of the Corry Evening Journal was named by Senator Albert R. Pechan as 1958 Pennsylvania Division Crusade chairman for the American Cancer Society covering Erie Clarion Crawford Forest Lawrence Mercer Venango and Warren counties. The 1968 Crusade opens noon April 1 and runs through April designated Cancer Control Month.

Bomb blast at Soviet Embassy tied to Virginia dynamite theft

Police and FBI pursue a link between the Washington DC embassy bombing and a dynamite theft in West Springfield Virginia. Eighteen sticks of dynamite and 50 blasting caps were stolen from a nearby construction site as the four story embassy suffered damage and the incident strained U S Soviet relations. Gov. Lurleen Wallace was rushed to a hospital by ambulance early today amid a possible cancer recurrence. Navy Academy to dismiss 13 midshipmen over marijuana use

At the U S Naval Academy in Annapolis 13 midshipmen face dismissal after being found smoking marijuana in Bancroft Hall dormitory. Rear Adm. Draper L Kauffman said the recommendation heads to Secretary Paul R Ignatius and would be the largest such dismissal in the academy’s 23 year history.
