Raymond Mfg. Co announces a 600000 expansion to its plant with an architect’s view highlighting a new face for the facility. The plan shows the west side office and factory addition, with Buildings 12 and 12A to be razed to clear space for the project.
Former FBI undercover agent Mary Markward testified that Annie Lee Moss, a Pentagon cafeteria worker, was known as a Communist and allegedly worked in the Army Signal Corps decoding room handling top secret messages. The hearing, led by Senator McCarthy, featured Democratic counsel Robert Kennedy and sought to link Army officials to tolerating Communists amid a heated Senate clash with Secretary Stevens.
The House Appropriations Committee released testimony showing eleven State Department employees were suspected loyalty risks in 1953. Across seven agencies, 1,068 security dismissals or resignations were recorded in 1958 for about 761,600 workers, with forty listed as subversives.
Assistant Secretary of State Walter Robertson told Congress the Chinese Reds are executing the bloodiest pattern by liquidations and famine, killing about 15 million since 1949. He warned of Asia emergencies, urged keeping Nationalist forces on Formosa, expanding Japanese trade, and maintaining allied strength amid upheaval in Korea and the mainland.
Sparta man Robert Frankendekd of RD 2 Spartansburg paid 90 to Game Projector John Putnam for placing traps within 26 feet of a beaver dam. The violation, 18 feet from the dam, violates state game code. Only trapping violation this season in the area. trappers say conditions improving as water levels drop.
Corry dentists met at Gerry Dental Association offices on North Center Street to decide on a list of patients who repeatedly refuse to pay. The committee will amend the list as needed and share it with member dentists to deny credit to those named. Estimates show several thousand dollars owed overall, with plans to create a minimum fee schedule and office policy statement. Future discussions may cover credit for dentures and major work, with financing options via banks and lenders.
Cleveland police weigh action after Anthony Derda, 29, admits killing a boyhood friend in 1935 and letting another youth bear the blame. He says he shot 7-year-old Steve Kotola near Pittsburgh during a rabbit hunt, then framed Oberhelman, who was tried and acquitted. Derda seeks to clear conscience and get right with God. In Pittsburgh, Det. Captain Joseph Flynn described Oberhelman as mentally retarded and institutionalized prior to the case.
Richard Paulson, former Corry resident and Corry Journal reporter, is named manager of Ford Motor Company North Central Public Relations Office in Cleveland. Hayes Holmen as assistant manager and Arthur Garner as plant editor will staff the six-state regional operation covering Cleveland Buffalo Pittsburgh Cincinnati and Louisville districts. Paulson, son of Andrew Paulson of Maple Avenue, moves to Cleveland after joining Ford five years ago from a 16-year newspaper career including Erie Times and Detroit Free Press.
In Saigon the French high command announced the 18 day siege of Muong Sai near Luang Prabang ended with help from American bombers. Viet Nam Division 308 paused advances toward Luang Prabang and regrouped 6a miles northwest in the Bac River valley after operations near the royal capital and Muong Sai.
Republicans seek President Eisenhower’s help to gain support for the administration’s tax plan as Democratic proposals push broad exemptions. Some GOP leaders worry about attacks claiming the plan favors business over the average taxpayer while Democrats promise larger cuts for individuals, potentially widening deficits. Eisenhower defends a balanced approach aiming to spur consumer spending and provide incentives for business.

Harrisburg The Public Utility Commission suspended for six months the General Telephone Co of Pennsylvania proposed rate increase of about 1.541 million dollars. The commission ordered an investigation into reasonableness of the proposed rates and will set a hearing date soon after filing on March 1 amid multiple customer complaints.
Former Erie Alderman Joseph Kliszewski received a 5 to 10 year prison term in Western Penitentiary for voluntary manslaughter in the shotgun death of his wife Helen. Judge Samuel Rossiter rejected a mercy plea as Kliszewski showed no emotion during sentencing. Defense argued the shooting was unintentional and amid mental disturbance and alcohol influence.
State Police at the Corry barracks arrested John H. Irwin 34 of Erle for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence after a truck he drove owned by Beckwith Machinery Company overturned on Route 10 a mile south of Waterford. He was jailed and to appear before an alderman. The vehicle suffered about 2000 dollars in damage. Irwin was uninjured.
The State Liquor Control Board revoked one license and suspended eight others. Among the suspensions is Frank and Beatrice Ferry, operators of Frank's Tavern on East Main Street, Corry, for 15 days due to allowing minors on the premises and sales to minors.
The Raymond Mfg Co began a second major expansion after World War II with contracts totaling about 500000. The Ludwig Co of Falconer NY is the general contractor for a new three story addition with 29400 square feet net gain, to be ready in 250 days, improving production and housing new offices.
