A heavy snowstorm moved from the Midwest into the Northeast bringing new whiteouts across Ohio Pennsylvania Virginia Maryland and Western New York. Snow fell during the night in the Great Lakes region with three to eight inch totals and Milwaukee reporting about 20 inches overall. Gusty winds created large drifts and highway travel slowed as removal efforts began and temperatures dipped near zero in portions of Kansas Iowa and Nebraska.
Snowfall of about two inches covered western Pennsylvania while eastern and central parts saw little or no snow on Sunday and Monday. State police reported smooth traffic on the Turnpike as last week’s storms closed a 45 mile stretch for 36 hours, stranding travelers. closures and school delays persisted in Bedford, Somerset, and Cambria counties.
In Oberlin Ohio seven children perished in a flash fire that swept two rear bedrooms of a one story frame home. Fire officials say a faulty heater fueled the blaze. Two ten-year-old boys and three adults escaped unharmed. The victims were seven Isom and Malone children, including Sheila 3 and Diane 3, with ages ranging from 1 to 8 among the deceased.
J Reed Dunn of Michael Baker firm will visit the city and meet any group. Corry Planning Commission chair E Anderson says arrangements can be made by contacting him today. Local officials stress early input will shape a master plan to be drafted and presented before next February. Initially about 50 groups were invited. the invitation has grown to 6 and now 8 groups may join the effort.
Snowstorm dumps four to six inches on the city closing last week’s disruptions. Roads open but hazardous with slippery conditions. State Highway crews plan special plowing to widen a drifted 20 foot section near Wattsburg Cutting. Traffic and trains running close to normal as weather improves.
Corry tractor operator Henry Fosburgh said the tractor was not stalled when a passing car struck it on West Columbus Avenue. Burl Cherry was knocked to the ground while directing traffic. Cherry was unhurt and declined medical care. Richard Sorenson, driver from Est Pleasant Street, said his car skidded about 200 feet before hitting the tractor.
A bogus check artist Harold Harris, 35, is jailed after using fake funds to buy a suit and topcoat for 104.50 at Paul Meerdink’s store in Corry. Harris then tried to cash another check and fled as police investigated, with a stakeout ending when he was spotted later on West Main Street.
President Eisenhower begins a 14 day Latin American tour on a four nation journey that will visit Brazil Argentina Chile and Uruguay. He stops in San Juan Puerto Rico overnight after departing Washington aboard a swept wing jet. He defends U S defense power calling it a trustworthy shield of peace and indestructible force.
MEADVILLE Injuries Saturday afternoon on Route 86 north of Meadville proved fatal for Erie resident Lawrence R. Motter 29. Driver blamed wind whipped snow obscuring vision. Motter died at City Hospital from intererrestrial injuries. his wife Helen Matter 25 in critical condition. 6 month old son Randall minor injuries.
The Corry YMCA launches a seven week teen discussion series starting Thursday, focusing on values and pasts. Robert Marsh opens the talks with Christian youth leaders to follow, with sessions on Tuesdays at 7 30 pm except the opener. A 10 cent fee covers the course with dinner at the final session. five of six discussions are read by various local leaders including Dr Arch Tate Paul Meerdink J Guy Butters Mrs Paul Bauer John Kennedy.

Dodd 28 of Waterford arrested on aggravated assault following a Saturday morning attack on three Spartansburg residents. Neil Stranahan 64 and Mrs Stranshan 44 and Mrs Tillotson 44 were injured after a collision and pursuit ending with Dodd beating the motorists and confronting bystanders. Stranahan accused Dodd of repeated blows. two women sustained cuts and bruises. Dodd pled guilty to a lesser count, fined $28 plus costs, and served a brief detention before release. Stranahan filed a separate assault complaint.
Four powerful tremors near the Hodna Mountains on a ridge southeast of Algiers killed 47 people and injured 100. Authorities feared more bodies beneath debris in Melole and Beni Smmane villages.
A tractor trailer overturned Saturday afternoon just east of the Columbus underpass on Route 6. The driver Richard Smoltz was not injured. Firemen stood by as gasoline leaked from the vehicle while authorities righted the cab. Workmen from the Welsh Grape Juice plant arrived to transfer the cargo to another trailer.
Millcreek police and state troopers investigate a daytime burglary at a Millcreek jewelry store. An undetermined number of watches and rings were stolen after entry via a forced door. Owner A L DeBus reported the break in around noon and a full inventory will confirm the loss, with authorities noting the value between nine and ten thousand dollars.
Oil Cityite 69 died of burns at Oil City Hospital after falling asleep while smoking in bed early yesterday. Lawrence Laney, who lived alone, was admitted at 2:30 am as flames spread from ashes from a pipe. Officials say the mattress fire sparked the blaze. no survivors are listed.
