Tokyo Admits Disaster At Tru Shift Command
Communes from rage Oned 3,000 yards in one day on Eniwetok indicated that pretlanding bom bardments were effective. Eniwetok Island guards the broad southern entrance into the lagoon. It is barely 100 yards wide and heavily wooded with coconut trees. Pony Island, held by the enemy, stands at the eastern entrance to the 20 mile long lagoon. William J Worden, AP war correspondent, said natives on the atoll are few and its value as an aircraft refueling base was important to the Japanese for routes between the Marshalls, Gilberts and Wake Island. Wake Island supply via Marcus Island was never well developed. Now Eniwetok is in American hands, forcing Japanese to use Marcus Island as a stepping stone to Wake.
