John Sloan, arrested by Patrolman Ruppersburg, was convicted of larceny from Everett and Steel chain stores in the city. He received a sentence of one to two years in the Western Penitentiary for stealing socks a clock and dice articles, valued at a few dollars, from the two stores. In the North Sea, eight crewmen aboard the Petunia were drowned when the trawler sank after colliding with the steamship Viva. The Petunia, a 204 ton vessel registered at Grimsby, was owned by T. W. Gnabom. Lloyds registry lists no Viva but suggests a possible misidentification with the Swedish steamer Sylla out of Gothenburg.
Oslo dispatch reports the steamer Norge grounded and sank near Haugesund. Two passengers, two stewardesses, and the captain were drowned within minutes as the ship went down after ten minutes at sea. Passengers were warned before disaster. captain remained on the bridge.
