France seeks exclusive atomic role in Geneva talks
Washington says the United States and the Soviet Union will attend the Geneva disarmament conference set to open March 14 with 18 nations. Charles de Gaulle urged that only the Big Four atomic powers lead nuclear arms talks, signaling France’s push for a dominant role and possible exclusion from broader deliberations. Officials note De Gaulle’s message omits Khrushchev’s summit-start idea and reiterates France’s preference for unilateral control of disarmament decisions.
