Jail Beck Overnight After Tax Conviction

Millionaire labor leader Dave Beck Jr. spent his first night in jail after being found guilty on four counts of income tax evasion totaling 240 067 for 1951 to 1953 and two counts of filing false returns. Probe Launched Into Three Near Plane Crashes

The FAA opened an investigation after three near collisions this week involving military and civilian aircraft near Charlotte and other cities. Fire truck brakes fail en route to blaze on East Main

Fire department crews answered a warehouse blaze near East Main street just before 12:30 p.m. when the truck brakes failed during a turn at Concord and East South streets. Nine responders aided the effort, and Deputy Neckers, the driver, kept the truck under control with slow speed. About $10 in damage to a nearby store was reported. Upstairs tenants Wille and Corstetter prevented a larger fire. Fire officials advised using salt or baking soda on such fires.
