Residents face crippling conditions as three more inches of heavy snow bury Corry and surrounding areas for two weeks. Only the persistent snowplow works Center street, erasing meters and reopening the main thoroughfare for limited traffic.
Amid ongoing snowfall roads remain blocked across the district with emergency reports flooding in. Corry Elxin area families, including Balog and Wetmore households, face isolation, fuel shortages, and frozen water lines as plow crews struggle to clear streets. Cattle lack water on Warner McCray farm while residents appeal to officials who say plowing will resume only after snow stops.
Erie County commissioners declared a state of emergency and sought state and National Guard help to remove snow from rural roads. They requested use of State Highways Department equipment and Erie's 112th Infantry Regiment, plus emergency snow removal funds. Headquarters were set up at the Civil Defense office in Erie City Hall annex. At least 27 deaths were linked to the storm as western Pennsylvania faced up to three inches of new snow and dire road conditions.
Reported plan states China and North Korea will withdraw all foreign troops from Korea by year end with recrossing of volunteers by April 30. Officials in Seoul and Washington doubt the pledge and predict possible propaganda value. United Nations forces face pressure as Beijing and Pyongyang push for talks and neutrality supervised unification.
The disappearance of an Ede NY serviceman en route to Corry has caused concern to his parents and companions. State Police report Richard Olin was visiting here and tried to return home last Monday but is missing. Snowbound between Clymer and Westfield, authorities fear the road north of Clymer is impassable. His father and brother searched from Buen to Westfield with little luck as heavy drills blocked progress.
State Police reported Route 819 and Route 19 south of Erie were open only briefly as heavy drifts blocked most highways. Route 20 east remained passable while trains were late and some passenger volumes delayed by the storm. Airlines grounded. Corry rural mail routes not covered. 5 to 6 foot drifts hampering snow removal. A wrecker towed a vehicle to Jamestown after a Monday wreck. Sears catalog deliveries arrived at the Corry Post Office. letter carriers face deep snow dents.
President Eisenhower asked Congress for 3.942 billion dollars in foreign aid warning against cuts that would raise defense spending taxes and draft calls. He urged strong support for mutual security programs citing Soviet threats and the need to aid newly independent nations.
School officials decided late this morning to close all classes for Corry and rural districts through the weekend. While city students may reach classrooms, most rural pupils cannot due to impassable roads. schools plan to reopen next Monday if possible, with Meadville also closing until then.
City residents overlook farm distress as rural dairy routes are hampered by snow. Farmers can store only about two days of milk and dumping occurs when deliveries lag. City route drivers spend hours digging out snowdrifts causing multiple hours of late deliveries.
The eastern half faced continued severe cold and heavy snow with western regions easing. Snow removal remains the major task in the storm battered Northeast as millions suffer disruptions, fuel and food shortages persist in rural areas, and deaths attributed to the weather rise to 209 across 26 states. Transportation remains hard hit amid gusty winds and record snowfall from Michigan to New England.
House Commerce subcommittee widens inquiry into the Miami Channel 10 dispute. Witnesses include A Frank Katzentine whose FCC approval was appealed, and Bernard Schwartz who testified about $2650 in checks to FCC Commissioner Richard Mack. Whiteside, a Miami lawyer, linked to National Airlines, faces scrutiny over loans and influence.
Ice jams crunched through the Mississippi River and its tributaries. The Ohio and upper Mississippi were reported blocked with many boats seeking shelter at Calva as crews awaited a break. Weather forecasts warned temperatures would stay well below freezing through the weekend.
The Corry Chamber of Commerce directors moved the annual banquet from Corry Area High School to Hotel Corry. The 6 30 p m event will feature IBM education manager J Bruce Buckler, with Olin Bracken Jr outlining last year s accomplishments. The group plans to recruit former Potato Festival chairs, reviews festival fallout, and shifts to a five day work week with the Credit Bureau out of chamber duties.
Nasser personally pressed Egypts claim to a border area near the Red Sea during a palace conference with Sudanese Foreign Minister Mohamed Ahmed Mahgoub. The Egyptian press urged restraint and blamed outsiders for any disturbance of Arab ties, calling for improved Sudan Egypt relations.
Spring Corp announces a regular quarterly dividend of 35 cents per share on 1,143,025 outstanding common shares, up five cents from prior, after adjusting for a 50 percent stock dividend in December 1957. The dividend is payable March 10, 1958 to stockholders of record February 24, 1958. The company reports 1957 net income of 2,089,052 and earnings per share of 182 cents, down from 3,361,087 and 293 cents in 1956. The annual report will be mailed to stockholders around March 1, 1958.
Washington sparing no words, the Army issued a draft call for 43 000 men in April matching March, with the monthly level expected through June. The total drafted or earmarked since September 1950 rises to 2 300 490.
Charred body of Mrs. Jeannette Dungee, 82, was found after a fire destroyed her home at Howaton. She lived with nephew Alex Lewis, who was away at the time. Local authorities investigated the blaze as the cause remained undetermined.
