COUNTY ROADS ARE DRIFTED AS GALES CONTINUE. Subzero winds and bitter cold grip the region as the storm worsened overnight. Snow piles five to six feet in rural areas while plows struggle to clear drifted roads. Temperatures plunged to seven above late last night and remained harsh into Tuesday with more snow and frigid winds forecast.
Associated Press report from Harrisburg notes a ripe moment for a study of Pennsylvania's 12 state teachers colleges. Dr Francis B Haas, state superintendent, says more vocational training is needed and a comprehensive review should precede any conversion proposals. Vandals wrecked the Susquehanna high school interior causing thousands of dollars in damage. The three story building was drenched by water from fire hoses used overnight. desks broken, hundreds of books ruined and many American flags shredded. Superintendent Frank A. Albee found the scene this morning.
Union City resident Guy W. Waldron of R D 3 Union City remained in serious condition at Union City hospital after a Saturday night collision on Roosevelt Highway. He suffered a fractured skull and other injuries from the accident. In Donora on February 19 CIO unionists halted operations at the American Steel and Wire Company plant, a defense materials producer, affecting about a fist of workers.
McKean county authorities charge Raymond Carroll of Corry with voluntary and involuntary manslaughter in the death of 89 year old Larson of Bradford. Larson died January 21 after a blow allegedly from Carroll in October. Carroll left Corry for Buffalo, authorities seek police aid to arrest him.
Berlin says air over the Atlantic was alive with SOS signals from British vessels. It reports the loss of the England-bound Netherlands tanker Turia of 10,354 tons after a noon attack by a long-range Nazi plane 435 miles west of Ireland. The raid hit the tanker amidships and left it listing in an oil slick.
In Washington on February 14 a group of women representing mothers organizations prayed aloud and demonstrated against the pending British Aid bill on the Capitol plaza. Led by Elizabeth Dilling author of The Red Network they had been twice dispersed by Capitol police when attempting to demonstrate near the Senate chamber.
Honolulu February 19 The Hawaii statehood issue, backed by a two to one plebiscite margin last November, again faces the 21st territorial legislature as it convenes today. Lawmakers offered no clear forecast on possible action beyond a routine resolution urging Congress to grant Hawaii admission as the fourth star in the American flag.
Cairo Feb 19 British forces captured the Ethiopian village of Njabara about 160 miles northwest of Addis Ababa along with many prisoners. Njabara lies 140 miles inside Ethiopia south of Lake Tana, near Gojjam province where Ethiopian battalions struggle against Italian and British positions during the campaign.
British para chute troops showcased a growing unit of skylightes for offensive war. Observers saw leather clad parachute troops dropped from carrier planes with equipment and support, simulating a mitile tack and capturing towns. The force, formed after the BEF’s return, is described as SS supershock troops.
German bombers attacked two northeastern Scottish towns injuring and killing residents. Reports say a schoolyard and a school bus were targeted as children had fled to safety. bombs wrecked homes and three people died with others injured.
