United Press reports in Harrisburg that a Townsend plan style pension of 200 dollars monthly for Pennsylvanians over 60 was introduced by Republican Senator Loyd Boyd. Harrisburg February 19 Robert L Johnson executive director of the state emergency relief board defended payroll increases as saving money noting 19 investigators hired saved 21080 weekly The plan calls for nine member local boards with three committees each chief aims speedier relief actions and decentralization for economy while serving about 495548 families or 1,894,000 people at 48 cents per day with 26 cents for admin costs Johnson urged strict economy and local authority to improve efficiency.
An early 20th century blaze at the La France textile mills in Philadelphia caused an estimated 250000 in losses. Four firefighters were injured and over a dozen others were overcome by smoke as 100 plus families fled the neighborhood. Firemen answered three alarms and contained the fire after several hours, with nearby La France Institute damaged but undamaged.
