Favorable Action Seen on Suffrage Despite Opposition Lobby
Harrisburg Feb 1 Despite strong opposition from a lobbying bloc fearing women’s ballot the equal suffrage bill has cleared the Tower House and moved to the Senate. Supporters expect a favorable vote before month’s end as Senate leaders favor letting voters decide this year. The House fight remained tight with many Republicans breaking from their platform to oppose the measure though Governor Brumbaugh endorsed referendum. Final tally showed 190 ayes to 71 nays with a large Republican showing opposing and Democrats largely in support. Governor Brumbaugh and State Association president Mra Roosstug urged swift passage to place suffrage before voters and constitutional amendment.
