Germany Wins Nine Day Battle of the East

London reports a major German victory over Russian forces in the Mazurian Lakes region ending February 6 to 9. German losses are described as light while Russians suffer thousands dead and wounded and large numbers of prisoners. German field command credited to Von Hindenburg with supports from Von Hültorn and Von Bulow. Vienna notes Russian retreats in Bukowina and Carpathians as German forces press three fronts. An early morning fire in Danville destroyed the Odd Fellows building, a principal office site. Two men were instantly killed and another two were badly hurt. the total loss is estimated around $100,000. The cause is not yet known.

Lent begins with services in churches

Ash Wednesday marks the start of Lent with special masses at Bl Thomas and St Elizabeths at 7 30 am. Emmanuel Church hosts Holy Communion at 10 am and Evening Prayer, Sermon and Penitential Office at 8 pm. During Lent Holy Communion is said each Friday and Friday evening prayers include an address. Wednesdays and Fridays are fasting days.

Havre reports a British collier Dulwich sunk by a German U-boat last night after the crew were warned to abandon ship. Twenty two men landed at one point, seven at another, two crew members missing, and the vessel destroyed following a twenty minute evacuation.

The Ladies of the order announce the twenty second anniversary celebration. Friday afternoon they entertain many friends from three to five o clock. In the evening the Knights of the Maccabees and their entourages will be entertained. First Bill Defeated in Legislature

Harrisburg February 17 The first bill killed in open vote by the House this session was Lipschaute of Philadelphia measure giving judges power to suspend jail sentences in civil actions when the defendant cannot settle the judgment. It failed 94 to 1074 with opponents saying it would disrupt fifty years of judicial practice and could be misused.

Driftwood Express Office Robbery Reported

The Adams Express Company office at Driftwood on the Pennsylvania Railroad was entered by burglars last night. They escaped with cash, checks, and a small jewelry shipment. Chief Davia was notified and Corry police warned to watch for stolen paper or plunder being moved into the city.

Poisoner of Dogs Active in City Again

The dog poisoner is at work in the city after months, targeting pets. Mrs Mary Whitlseys water spaniel died last evening, a small dog was poisoned but survived with veterinary aid from Douglas Titus. Dogs owned by Dandy of Mrs Hemmingway and Mrs Horn also fell ill Saturday evening. one other dog reportedly died. Police investigate with evidence pointing to a single suspect.
