Nelson told friends he was “fighting for his life” amid the upheaval.
Harold Sehask of Erie escaped from U S Army custody at a Corry area work site using a file to unlock handcuffs but was recaptured just south of the city by Chief John Flanigan and Patrolman Bielawski. Lawrence Bush, from Camp Livingston, La, confessed to desertion and joined Sehask in return to Pittsburgh with U S Military Police.
Gov Martin submitted to the Senate the nomination of Dr Frank Parker Penn professor for a $10000 post on the State Public Utility Commission succeeding Richard J Beamish whose term ends March 31. Beamish a familiar figure in the capitol through three administrations. Parker has taught at Penn Wharton for 30 years and has acted as financial counselor in utility rate and valuation cases since 1916.
Plans map a drive to recruit women for war industries with about 100 new workers desired by months. An open house at Hatch School on Friday February 19 will showcase women’s vocational classes and industrial training films. Bernard Williams of the UK Employment Service says the program seeks civic support. about 34 women are currently enrolled.
In Augusta two dozen residents fled a midnight rooming house fire near Grove and Swan streets by the state house. Seven perished including an 18 year old, with an elderly woman believed dying from burns. Six others injured amid bitter cold.
Two concussed pupils were led to safety as the five room Worthington Elementary School burned in an early February blaze. Principal Frank Leard estimated the loss at 25000 dollars. Some student coats were lost and four nearby houses had tools and clothing swamped by flames.
Stanford Hose Company representatives asked the Buffalo Fire Appliance Corp for an extended delivery to April 20 for a new pumper. Ottawa February 16. The sinking of the Canadian Corvette Louisburg off convoy duty in the Mediterranean costs 58 lives in enemy air attacks. Navy Minister Angus Macdonald announced this marked the first Canadian ship sunk in the Mediterranean and the first destroyed by an air attack in Canadian naval history.
