Stans Ties to Penn Central Amid Tax, Rail Aid Probes

Secretary of Commerce Maurice H. Stans reportedly held more than 300000 dollars in Penn Central subsidiaries when government aid to the railroad was discussed. Corryite's Truck Struck Kills Sherman Man

Donald M. Gabriel 56 of Sherman died after being crushed between a car and a pickup on Route 74. He was pronounced dead at the scene from a fractured skull. Gabriel worked as a mechanic and is survived by his wife Lucille and two sons. Services set for 2 p.m. at Spitzer Funeral Home. Burial in Sherman Cemetery. He was born March 15, 1914 in French Creek Township.

Senate weighs five per cent income tax in Pennsylvania

In Harrisburg the Senate opened debate on a 1.5 billion tax package after a six day House fight. Democratic leaders hoped for swift action with a 25 vote Senate majority needed. Gov. Shapp backed the plan, while Republicans pledged cooperation if the state’s money trail is clear. The package would cut the corporate tax, phase in collections, offer a relief credit, and sunset a sales tax on some goods. opposition criticized the plan as unfair to the middle class.

Roofs Collapse in Downtown Snow Storm

Heavy snow and ice caused the collapse of two adjacent downtown buildings late Saturday night. A pedestrian, Mrs Sharron Stebbins of Friendship, suffered leg and knee injuries when debris struck her, and five businesses plus union meeting rooms were damaged. Police estimate potential losses may exceed 100000 dollars with at least one business possibly a total loss. The three story wooden and one story brick structures collapsed onto sidewalks and street, crushing several parked cars.

Lone GOP tax backer Hopkins rails against partisan politics

Representative Forest Hopkins of North East the only Republican who supported Gov. Milton Shapp's five percent income tax plan says end partisan politics. The House approved the plan 105 to 97 after six hours of debate. 102 votes were needed. Hopkins notes the bill would tax income via a five percent employee withholding and urges bipartisanship to solve overspending issues while promising to back Shapp if he remains sincere. The measure still awaits Senate approval before statewide implementation.
