Two Make It Erie Pair Fail On Ice Trek Across Lake

Wesley Schalamon and Daniel Greene, both Union Carbide workers, attempted a 30 mile crossing from Catawba Point to Colchester Ontario on frozen Lake Erie. The pair turned back due to wind and worry from families, while a second duo from Erie to Long Point failed and were rescued after noon Sunday. The hikers carried minimal gear and told relatives to seek help only if overdue by six hours.

Four brothers slain in Hollandsburg mobile home

In Hollandsburg Indiana four Spencer brothers ages 14 to 2 were shot in their mobile home in an execution style slaying. Mother Betty Spencer 41 wounded escaped after suspects fled in a family car. Two suspects detained nearby. Police say wallet theft occurred. home ransacked and a neighbor recalls the mother seeking help.

$1,500 Stolen From Area School Safe

Burglars used tools in a high school workshop to open an office safe at Maplewood High School in Townville. Cash and checks totaling $1,800 were taken. Corry state police responded to RD 1 on Saturday to investigate. Burglars moved the safe to the workshop and opened it with tools before fleeing. Investigation continues.

Welfare Rules Increase Pennsylvania Economy

Pennsylvania welfare rolls approach one million as economy worsens. AP reports 955,000 recipients, with increases driven by recession and inflation. State public assistance spending up 51 percent since 1970 71, while medical assistance rose 140 percent to 456 million. Inpatient daily cost up from 132 to about 170, and mental health aid surged from 213 to 450.6 million.

Vo Tech Probe Continues Over Corry Vo Tech Building Pickets

NLRB agents in Erie conduct a continuing inquiry into a Corry Aves School District vo-tech project stalled by pickets from Erie Lodge 333 of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union. The district sought an injunction to stop the non union CJ Peterson and Sons firm from working, halting the job as union lines blocked other contractors. Superintendent Charles Krepps and supervisor Marlin Klingensmith testified before the federal board on the second day.

Woman, 72, Shot In Fight With Intruder

Anna Mae Peterson of Sheffield is hospitalized in satisfactory condition with a gunshot wound to the right chest after a basement scuffle with an unknown intruder late Saturday. State police said the assailant, wearing a dark tasseled cap and Mackinaw coat, fled after the brief encounter as Peterson struck back with scissors. The investigation continues.

Corry Gains Water and Reservoir Up Foot

Corry's water situation improved but remained serious as crews fixed a four inch main near the Corry Motor Inn and tackled a Northwest street break. The city reservoir rose about a foot to seven feet. normal level is twenty. Fire company assets remained on site, an insulator fault disrupted pumps Saturday night, and a manual valve on a two inch line at Corry Jamestown will be used until replacement. Waters restrictions continued with careful conservation as repairs proceed and melting snow aids replenishment.

Welfare Department Budget Surges to 1.6 Billion

Weekend crash tally shows five figures in damages

Three Minor Crashes Leave $1100 In Damages

Police investigated three weekend traffic crashes causing total damage of 1100 across six cars. No injuries were reported. Wertz and Miscik collided on West Smith Street with Wertz backing into Miscik, causing 100 and 200 dollars of damage respectively. Bennink backed into a parked Johnson vehicle on Wright Street causing 150 dollars damage to both cars. Shumsky slid into Tanner on Sciota Road, with 100 dollar damage to Shumsky and 400 to Tanner.
