Authority to Raise Interest Rates on Savings Bonds
The Treasury asked Congress for authority to apply flexible interest rates to savings bonds and proposed raising the rate from 3% to 3.5%. Bills sent to Senate and House would grant the Treasury the same rate-adjustment power it has on other securities. If approved, the higher rate would apply to all Series E and H bonds sold after February 1. The plan says there’s no advantage in delaying purchases and notes that the Series E baby bonds would sell at the same price with the same maturity value, though the 9 years 6 months maturity would be shortened to 8 years 11 months.
