S. G. Purvis of Butler was appointed chief of the division of biological products by Dr. Edith McBride-Dexter state secretary of health. He succeeds Roy G. Miller who is under arrest on charges of distributing diphtheria antitoxin free.
In Washington the American Federation of Labor plans to form a new steel workers union separate from the Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel and Tin Workers. Leadership disputes cloud the move as 400,000 workers are cited with only 6,000 active members. destek
A 44 year old Cleveland railroad man Edward Verra was found dead near Sharon with an arm fractured after cashing his check. Police were unsure if the death was an accident or homicide as the county coroner opened an inquiry. Verra resided at 1428 Abbey Avenue, Cleveland.
United Press reports a proposed threefold defense plan including a strengthened merchant marine coast defense and air bases. Roosevelt seeks fast passenger liners convertible to troop transports and fleet freighters convertible to airplane carriers, funded by subsidies of 20 to 25 million dollars annually. Palmer to draft the legislation as Roosevelt plans to send the plan to Congress soon with a message for shipping protection.
Harrisburg report on Governor Earle's plan outlines a $150 million general budget and a total $250 million package for 1935 37. Proposals include raising taxes for unemployment relief, a one year basis for some levies, and a constitutional change to extend borrowing limits. The Hart committee estimates $271 million needed over two years with a $21 million deficit this biennium.
A $20,000 blaze partially destroyed a building in Kittanning and threatened the Municipal building next door. A patrolman saw smoke pouring from the chain grocery building, prompting three fire companies to contain the flames. The cause is under investigation. In Philadelphia, Dr. Arthur Hartle t, 63, head of anatomy at Hahnemann Medical College, died. funeral services set for Wednesday.
The Wichita era reports a February 16 skating carnival in Pawnee led by the American Legion and notable sponsors. A junior events afternoon and senior program evening feature races, barrel jumping and fancy skating with plans to draw visitors from Erie Lakewood and Warren. In Pawnee, Phil Kennamer, 18, faces trial for murder and extortion linked to the death of John Gurvel.
Nine year old Wendell Aiken was killed instantly in Nesho nnock Pennsylvania when struck by a speeding car while watching his grandfather repair a tire. His mother Mrs Ross Aiken and sister were driving from Youngstown, Ohio when the crash occurred. Also noted is the death of miner John Brunnét, 69, from a gas explosion at Hornell Mine in Creighton Pennsylvania. A search party found his body about thirty hours after the blast.
Ridgway Pa February 11 Requiem mass was said at St Lee s Roman Catholic Church for TH Lee Hing former Elk County commissioner who died two days after release from jail where he was serving a six month sentence for misdemeanor in office. With Commissioner E DeHaven Brown Ledden was convicted last year Appeals carried to the state Supreme Court were rejected and they began serving their sentences in Bic County Jail last January 28th.
Friends of Anna Zinn's family in Untontown Pa launched a subscription campaign to raise funeral costs after the 15 year old girl was shot while parking. Police continued searching for Jefferson Walters as investigators pursued leads and the buried suspect, Albert Thorpe, 31, had already been laid to rest.
