Lloyd McBride led in unofficial USW presidential returns with 290,077 votes to Edward Sudlowski’s 198,472 among about 4,000 locals reporting. The 60 year old St Louis director would succeed J W Abel, who retires in June from a $75,000 post as the union’s leader of 14 million members.

Des Moines Fire Kills Four in Decaying Apartment Blaze
A Des Moines fire left four dead and ten injured as a decaying apartment building burned. Vivian Rand, 26, and her five year old daughter Sonya died after begging for rescue. Nellie Hall, 55, and Larry Gene Thomas, 28, were also killed.

Bank Hostage Siege Ends Peacefully in Silver Spring
A 27 year old man from Silver Spring Maryland identified as Stephan Gregory armed with two rifles held seven bank employees as hostages for seven hours in a suburban Washington bank. Police say he fired more than 200 rounds but made no serious threats and released all hostages before surrendering early this morning.
