Miners Shut Five Coal Firms Amid Union Drive
In Somerset County miners closed five coal companies in a protest against Solar Fuel Co. efforts to reopen during an organizing drive. Separately Cambria County saw a back to work movement at five mines after Thursday strikes. Union officials accused Solar president Cramer Berkey of breaking a pact to keep the mines closed while talks continued. Joseph Yablonski urged Gov. action as 300 U S Steel workers at the Robena complex in Greene County did not report for the afternoon shift over a dispute about reinstating two suspended union committee members. Jobless claims rose in January with 191,000 unemployed in Pennsylvania, up 44,000 from December.
