Hastings Begins Sentence for Kickback Conviction
Former U S Representative James Hastings of western New York began a 20 month to five year term at a federal prison camp in Florida after being convicted on 20 counts of mail fraud and eight counts of making false statements. He resigned his seat in 1977 to lead Associated Industries of New York and faced multiple kickback allegations linked to staff and associates. Hastings, 50, argued about debts and earnings during the case, and was acquitted on some related counts.
