An estimated five people witnessed a band’s arrival at the airport as they prepared for a series of appearances in the United States. No fans cheered, and the scene was subdued while the group planned subsequent engagements.
About 3,000 delirious teens greeted the Beatles on arrival at Kennedy Airport. Fans jammed barricades, showered the quartet with jelly beans and candy kisses as Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, and John Lennon, all in their early twenties, posed for acclaim. Lennon's wife, Yoko Ono, was not visible.
A local man indicted on malicious mischief was released after Judge Burton R. Laub ruled testimony to the grand jury unusable. John Lunk, 23, held in Frie County on possible probation violation, is under investigation. Sank, repeatedly arrested, was charged and later freed after authorities questioned criminal intent and parole status. Also, Bernard Mestinis, 85, retires as Allegheny County Democratic chairman. Corry's County Club plans a membership drive to reverse losses. Membership now defers the $100 initiation fee until age 35, with a two year payment plan. Dues and new rates for families and seniors set, plus special assessments. Feasibility study cites revenues above prior projections and notes clergy admission lines.
Washington AP reports a bipartisan drive to add a fair employment practices provision to the civil rights bill. Southern opponents, weakened by Republican and Northern Democratic coalitions, aim to kill the provision while leaders push to finish action on other items and bring a final vote tonight or possibly Monday. The proposal would create a federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to investigate workplace discrimination and enforce orders through court action, despite long-standing House skepticism and weak past success.
Twenty five Corry Area High School parents met at the school to map plans for the annual Post Prom Party after the junior-senior prom on May 29. Cochairmen Mr and Mrs Robert Bracken led early planning to entertain about 500 youths at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Club starting around 1 am. Committee chairs covered financing, music, souvenirs, registration, decorations, entertainment, prizes, house, and food with last year’s cost of over $400 guiding budget.
In Allen Massachusetts police described an assault against 16 year old Georgia Eilis a high school sophomore who collapsed at a doorway while seeking help. A nylon stocking was found knotted around her neck and she was later reported in satisfactory condition at a hospital. Police note a pattern of similar unsolved stranglings in eastern Massachusetts with stockings used in many cases.
A near record crowd of 49 members of The Overcomers met last night at Emmanuel Episcopal Church for a regu lar crafts session. The club, for the citys handi capped, meets twice monthly with CHEER sponsoring this month the first anniversary of both groups. Leaders supervised groups on puppets, cooking, embroidery, sewing, crafts and needlework as Beaverdam church women aided. An anniversary display is planned at the VFW on February 21, with Kiwanis reserving seats for the handicapped at a high school auditorium show.
Erie County GOP leader Neal Coughlin says 87 395 residents are unregistered. The current registration drive, chaired by M A Carlson Jr with Jeanne Gezon as co chair, is ahead of state targets. Volunteers are welcomed. transportation can be provided via GOP headquarters in Erie at GL 3 6631 or GL 2 6284.
In Kittanning Pennsylvania an unoccupied car rolled forward on a rural road and struck 15-year-old Carol Dobrosky of Shelbeata R D 1 Armstrong County while she and two boys were en route to a movie. Police said the vehicle moved as the boys prepared tools after it had stalled.
United States appeals to Allied governments to join in a broad economic squeeze on Cuba after President Johnson ordered Guantanamo’s base to be self sufficient in water. The move followed Castro cutting the base’s fresh water supply, with Rusk and Johnson framing the decision as a long term, measured response. The administration argues the base will remain at Guantanamo and plans to reduce Cuban labor and shift water supply, while exploring actions through the OAS and NATO. The Cuban leadership disputes U.S. claims and pledges to seize the base if convenient.
In Cyprus crisis Khrushchev denounces a proposed NATO peace force as an armed intrusion and says the Soviet Union will not ignore events near its south. He sent notes to the United States Britain France Greece and Turkey accusing NATO members of blocking UN solutions. Khrushchev seeks to influence the island while Makarios favors UN oversight though open to foreign police.
In Erie County court Judge Burton Laub freed Howard Clabbatz of unlawful possession of deer parts. Two Wattsburg men and a third man had altered testimony after a prior conviction, the case centering on an illegally killed buck near Grand Valley. State game officials investigated and testified about the freezer storage of venison at Clabbatz’s home.
