The Legislature presses a 50 50 tax compromise combining a two percent sales tax with a two percent income tax plus a two percent gross receipts tax on lodging and food. Officials expect about 360 million from these levies plus 100 million from business taxes to balance the biennial budget, though the plan sparks concerns about wage deductions and partisan gridlock. The piece argues the income tax should be temporary and that a three percent sales tax would be insufficient without broader reform.
