Atlanta, Feb 8. Warmth returning from a heavy snowdrift threatens vast flood damage as rivers near capacity. Dozens drowned and many left homeless. over 1,000 refugees gathered in Rome and near Selma as rapid melt could worsen flooding along the Coosa and Alabama river basins.
Raffaele Chirien 4io proprietor of the First Avenue beer place will be given a hearing before Police Magistrate Glen Miller on charges of operating a disorderly house. Mayor Miller ordered the campaign and evidence will be submitted. Hearing set for 7 p.m. at the Municipal building amid multiple complaints of disorderly outbreaks. Joe Amorosso, Grey Chill restaurant proprietor, also to face similar charges Monday evening.
The Townsend club session in the Grand theatre elected delegates for district conventions. Club No 1 chose A W Covell and Pred Gond ers with alternates John Lanston and Mrs Fred Comers. club No 2 nominated S R Salmon as delegate and Grant Hosier as alternate. The meeting featured a humorous reading by Mrs Charles Stewart and remarks on a two per cent transaction tax.
Dave Shaffer, termed public enemy No 1 of the lower anthracite region, was sentenced to life in prison for killing his sister Bertha 19 during a gun battle with state troopers near Shamokin. A jury rejected the death penalty after a brief deliberation and Shaffer awaits the formal sentence in Northumberland County Prison.
A broken jar of gasoline started a blaze last night that killed all children and left the holy father badly burned. The victims were Marion Carpenter 5, Jack 7, Edna 12, and Walter 14, children of Mr and Mrs William Carpenter of London township five miles from here. Mrs Carpenter was in London at the time. Grant Carpenter, another son, was staying with his grandmother nearby.

Admiral Standley warned the United States will not accept battleship limits below 35 000 tons and 14 inch guns, unless Japan and other powers meet agreed terms this year.
Five prisoners escaped today from the Kentucky state reformatory after overpowering a guard while working in the prize chair factory. Names not yet learned. Mrs Belen Schluraff nominated Michael Gallagher of Erie for county sealer of weights and measures. Commissioners Flatley and Blair considered the bid. the nomination failed after a tie vote and the current sealer has not resigned. Also Edward Pokorski named county grave registrar and maintenance man for courthouse machines. ASPHYXIATED IN CAR Pittsburgh Feb 8 James Harris 22 died of carbon monoxide poisoning.
President Roosevelt planned to issue invitations to all American republics to attend a conference on peace machinery for the Western hemisphere. Invitations would be sent via U S embassies and legations to organize a conference of American states.
Former vice president Charles Curtis, noted for his Indian lineage and Prairie nobility, died this morning at his Washington home after a sudden attack. Officials reported no further details immediately available.
State Chairman Harvey Taylor states Pennsylvania will dispatch seven delegates to the June Cleveland convention without pre-convention pledges.
