California Aviators Forced Down in Durability Flight Attempt
Imperial Calif February 8 United Press A split gas tank forced aviators Albin K Peterson and Charles F Rocheville to abandon their attempt to set a world endurance flight record after 48 minutes in the air over Imperial Valley. The Albatross carried 1300 gallons of gasoline and circled at about 100 feet while struggling to stay aloft with the heavy load. The crew planned a three day non stop trek with food aboard and radio operator Jack Reed was along as navigator. The aircraft plunged onto the dry lake bed runway for a half mile before lifting off again.
