War dispatches report dull conditions on the Warsaw front with scarce details of the big engagement. Reins of terror spread in Bohemia with executions for demonstrations, while Austro German forces push Russian withdrawals in Hungary as French artillery dominates in the Woëvre region.
Chief Harry Davis took charge after a neighbor reported an assault on Kathryn Carroll, an aged Indianapolis resident. Investigators and a physician found old injuries and concluded she likely fell near her doorstep, with her delirium casting doubt on the assault claim.

Governor Taya signed the state wide prohibition bill, approved by the Senate yesterday, making Arkansas dry on January 1, 1940. The signing was celebrated by city forces across the state.
Washington February 6 telgraph orders renew a general renewal of the foot and mouth disease epidemic. Stockyards at Chicago Buffalo Indianapolis Lovinville Pittsburgh and Jersey City are closed or placed under new control. Cattle in transit will proceed only if examination shows no symptoms of the disease.
Meadville February 6 United Press reports Fred Snyder an employee of the Hrle matching stops was struck by a steel chip while working and has lost his left eye. Doctors gave up hope of saving his sight today.
The body of Wallace Chatterdon, a brakeman, was found yesterday in the west branch of Sinnamahonng Creek about eight miles from the wreck site on the Pehway at Keating Summit. No signs of foul play were found. authorities believe he ended his life by drowning after the crash of two locomotives occurred a week ago.
Six men died and four were injured in an early morning explosion at the New River Company mine in Fayette County near Charleston. About 130 workers were in the shaft and galleries when an open lamp caused the blast. rescuers retrieved three bodies by noon, with others expected to surface later.
Supt Lyle Van Vieck leads highway department work to install permanent cast iron road signs next spring. Signs will include distances and directions at dangerous curves and railway crossings, mounted on concrete buried posts. A statewide highway department convention in Harris Miss will cover new bookkeeping and department procedures.
A bandit entered the National Bank of Lita today, forced the cashier and clerk into a corner with a cord, and escaped with about ten to twelve thousand dollars. Employees were later found by customers. the bandit remains at large with no clues.
Last evening Kter Davis visited the Italian place on First Avenue where Martin had claimed him. He had sold the coat he stole from the K P Hall and served notice on the inmates that unless the cost was returned to the Graight home on Marlon Street before this morning he would raid the plate with the local force. The warning was heeded and this morning the coat was reported returned. Weather forecast indicates snow tonight and Sunday remains cold.
