Giuseppe Arino, a notorious East Side gunman, shot and killed Patrolman Murtha as he ordered a bystander to move. In the chase, Avino fired at bystanders and wounded Fireman James O Connor and another officer. Officers pursued him through the street. Avino died after a fierce exchange.
