A Franklin jury acquitted 22 year old Lydia Dean after an eight day murder trial finding her story of an accident in the shooting of her husband credible. She left jail 18 hours later with a red rose for his grave.
A jury acquitted Lydia Dean of first and second degree murder in the shooting death of her Air Force husband Ronald S. Dean. The widow receives her late husband’s $10,000 GI life policy. if convicted, their 4-year-old daughter would have been beneficiary. Lydia, 22, told reporters she hopes to work as a secretary to support her daughter in the United States. The verdict followed a long jury deliberation after the gunshot death at her parents’ home last December 7.
The Board of Education with Mayor Wagner approves a crime curb plan for city schools. The program considers six additional special schools for disturbed youngsters, a proposal long debated in public.
Arab allies in Beirut and elsewhere condemn the Ankara Baghdad Pact talks as a victory for communism. Editors call for neutral stance or focus on Palestine while noting pro-Western voices split over the pact and U.S. solution failures.

Two young men escaped serious harm when their car hit an icy spot and struck a cement abutment ten miles east of Corry on Route 6. Paul Greenfield 73 and William Kate 26 were taken to Corry Memorial Hospital with chest injuries and leg wounds. the car was a total loss with about $3,000 damage.
Corry schools reopen amid high absenteeism. 316 students missing. Attendance statewide hit 87.5 percent, below normal 92 to 99 percent, with 86 absences at Conelway School in the Cutter Hill district where roads remain treacherous.
A Northwest section hospital reported a infant boy weighing seven pounds was stolen from his cradle yesterday evening. A nurse aide is suspected of moving the infant to a hallway bed while the attackers fled through ward doors. Police warn the child is in grave danger as a statewide alert is issued.
Cape Canaveral reports the Navy's Vanguard rocket failed one minute after launch at 2:33 a.m. The vehicle disintegrated into five pieces as the test range safety officer terminated the flight. If successful, the mission would have placed a small moon into orbit alongside the Army Explorer launched Friday by the Jupiter-C missile.
Moscow rushed a rapid report after the Vanguard launch failed as the rocket blew up in flight just after liftoff. The U S effort, already troubled by earlier mishaps, faced renewed doubts while the Soviet Union extended its satellite lead with Sputniks still in orbit.
