May Cut County Tax Another Half Mill Soon
Brig Feb 2 Agreed a week ago that the 1985 tax rate would be cut from nine to eight mills, county commissioners Friday seriously considered reducing the figure to 7.5. The half mill cut would cost $63,000 in revenue but still leave more than $200,000 in reserve over estimated expenditures. Commissioners must decide by Feb 15. A motion for 7.5 mills appears likely to pass unanimously. The unsettled rate is blamed on statewide issues in Harrisburg and fears of measures that could reduce revenue. If finalized, a 7.5 mill rate would be set between Feb 8 and 16.

Capital Stock Tax Debate Divides Pennsylvania Trade Groups
Lancaster Feb 2 The Pennsylvania State Chamber of Commerce backs a plan for personal income tax and a 3 percent sales levy. William H Hager of the Pennsylvania Retailers Association criticizes the plan for shielding large manufacturers and calls for a capital stock tax to fund state treasury. He notes such a tax would raise 35 to 40 million dollars and argues taxation is not equitable while manufacturing wealth remains tax free. The Retailers Association, allied with other trade groups, opposes reviving the sales tax.

New Racket Develops In Elk County
RIDGWAY A new racket develops in Elk County as two youths from the Kersey district operate undisturbed in road houses and dance halls. They enter, play slot machines, then pilfer the contents. The pair, with a prison record and a fast-growing reputation, still hold two machines and threaten ransom. A vigilant proprietor reportedly awaits them with a large iron bar.
