Reagan Opens Citizens for the Republic Political Group
Washington AP reports Ronald Reagan launching Citizens for the Republic from Santa Monica with up to 1 million dollars. The group, chaired by Reagan with Senate ally Paul Laxalt on the steering committee, will fund and promote conservative Republican candidates and ideas, producing literature and broadcasts to broaden the GOP base and support a potential 1980 presidential bid. Lyn Nofziger leads the effort, aiming to align with the party while keeping Reagan a major political force.

Permanent Tax Cuts Favored Over $50 Stimulus Plan
Senate Republicans push for a permanent individual tax cut program over Carter’s $50 per person rebates. The plan, costing less in revenue than Carter’s $31.2 million two-year package, aims to create jobs and steady growth without one shot stimulus. Conference deliberations proceed as Blumenthal testifies. The GOP would drop rebates, seek a higher personal exemption, and offer a new business tax incentive rather than funding Social Security payroll tax relief.
