Wages Relative to Past Decades Under Review
Census figures show the American workingman’s share of product value in 1929 rose with output to 11.271 billion in wages for 63 billion dollars of goods, but this implies a large discrepancy versus 1849 wages. The piece argues wages may be lower relative to production than 80 years ago, despite higher living standards and modern conveniences. Charles P. Stewart notes the apparent paradox and asks whether gains in output translated into worker pay.
