She had discussed college and teaching Latin, and sometimes talked of becoming a nun. Police found her leather bound poem book. the coroner reported she was not raped. Thaddeus Jarosz found her body.
About 100 newly graduated Pennsylvania state police troopers will reinforce road and highway coverage over the New Year weekend. Commissioner E Wilson Purdy said maximum traffic coverage will be maintained from 6 p.m. New Year Eve until midnight Sunday.
U.S. Senator Richard B. Russell, head of the Senate Armed Services Committee, urged reevaluating America’s position in South Viet Nam. He warned the effort costs about 1.5 million dollars daily, questions bombing jungle trails, and said Saigon needs broad popular support to avoid endless involvement. The committee will study Viet Nam and Congo situations early in the new session.
Falls to death at a steel mill under construction in Mingo Junction, Ohio. Alexander Pamphilis, 24, of Bellaire, died about four hours after a fall from scaffolding. He suffered a fractured skull and internal injuries. Authorities believe the accident occurred at the scaffold location.
Kentucky will allow 18 year olds to sign for homes loans and charge accounts starting Jan. 1 under a 1964 act. The state becomes the first to set 18 as the age for both men and women, with alcohol and handicapped child care age limits remaining at 21. Critics warn of risks in business dealings by youths.
Government troops recaptured Binh Nghia district capital but Viet Cong seized two American servicemen. In the same action a three day battle killed two Special Forces men. 13 Americans missing, about 240 slain total, as 1,200 government troops fought alongside 1,200 enemy fighters.
The Pennsylvania State Education Association with 76 000 members seeks a new salary schedule costing about 54.5 million dollars and funded by local and state taxes. It would raise minimums for many districts while large districts like Pittsburgh and Philadelphia would see no immediate change. The plan, approved during the annual convention in Pittsburgh, targets all teaching categories except the starting classroom wage of 4500 dollars.
The Labor Department reports a 0.2 percent rise in the consumer price index in November 1967, driven by higher view and used car prices due to General Motors and Ford strikes. Housing clothing and medical fees also contributed. The index stands at 108.7, about 1.2 percent above November 1963.
