Governor Milton J. Shapp signed bills allowing Pennsylvanians over 65 to ride mass transit free during off peak hours starting July 1. The program, funded by state lotteries, applies on weekends holidays and weekday nonrush hours, with rebates aiding 270000 elderly residents.

Israeli jets crossed the cease-fire line into Syria to bomb a guerrilla base, two Syrian army positions, and an artillery battery in reprisal for guerrilla attacks. The raids end a five week lull near Nahal Golan with no immediate casualty estimates. Guerrilla movements and ambush attempts were reported nearby as well.
Ross Township appeals a court ruling to refund $5,000 in traffic fines from a speed trap. Judge Sylvestri invalidated 500 tickets, siding with West Penn AAA that the state violated the Motor Vehicle Code by using stop watches instead of speedometers. The township said it has appealed to the Commonwealth Court for clarification.
