Denver Mint Half Dollars Last Holdout Against Copper-Nickel Plan
The Mint continues producing scarce silver half dollars at the Denver facility despite a Treasury push for a copper-nickel version to conserve silver. In November the Denver Mint stamped 18.65 million half-dollars, about 20 percent of the $100 million legal ceiling, with reserves vanishing as circulation lags. The public hoards silver content while collectors and banks hold limited inventories, and a Congressional decision to allow nonsilver halves remains unresolved. The Philadelphia Mint plans to scale up production to 16 million coins daily by year end, and a rolling-coin method trial has been suspended due to shorter die life.
