A intruder broke into a woman's rooming house killing a girl and wounding a second, Margaret Brown, 20, who escaped by shoving her attacker. Police searched the area and used tracking dogs as they investigated the brutal assault.

Blast Wrecks Area Home in Westfield

A two story frame house in Westfield was heavily damaged by two blasts and fire after 5 pm. A gas leak caused the explosions in the basement and an outside main. Miss Mary Johnston was alone in the home and had been staying with a sister while recovering from hospitalization. Fire chief notes gas had been detected by two boys earlier but explosions occurred before crews could respond. Fire destroyed much of the interior and the structure was jolted from its foundation.
