Faulty Brakes Blamed In Bus Plunge Tragedy

Hopewell Va December 23 faulty brakes were blamed for an Appomattox county bus tragedy that killed 14 people and left several unidentified. The blue bus plunged through a drawbridge gate into the river as rescue crews pulled bodies from the water. Driver L G Alford Raleigh NC was among the dead and officials indicated he may have known the cause of the crash.

Christmas Mail Rush Delays Reported at Post Office

Snow and cold slowed Christmas mail distribution as trains ran behind schedule and carriers fell short of time goals. Postmaster Harry Auer said congestion grew, prompting a special delivery to ease mounting workloads. The office exhausted staff and temporary workers, yet open windows remained busy with Corry residents mailing parcels. The rush was expected to ease for outgoing mail tomorrow, while incoming mail could peak.

Weekend traffic toll rises across the United States

Ey Wince Frew Snow and heavy holiday traffic caused more than 50 deaths over the weekend in unusual road accidents nationwide. Fire and cold, automobiles and trains, accounted for at least 15 more deaths in western Pennsylvania. Fourteen were killed when a bus skidded over an open road gap near Hopewell Virginia.

New Deal Rulings On January 6

United Press reports Washington December 23 the Supreme Court adjourned for the Christmas recess after adding the Guffey coal control case to the New Deal docket and signaling plans to return January 6 with decisions on constitutional challenges to the AAA TVA and Bankhead cotton control acts.

Father Son Escape As Auto Upsets Near Lindsley Hollow

Ward Alexander and his son Robert of West Congress Street narrowly escaped serious injury when the Studebaker driven by Alexander skidded on icy pavement on the Corry Spartansburg road near Lindsley Hollow. The car overturned into a fence post, the post piercing the roof but injuring none of the front-seat occupants. Both men escaped with slight bruises and a shake. The auto was badly damaged and later towed to the city for repairs.

December Golden Rule Sale 15 Called Off

The Golden Rule Club postpones the December sale scheduled for Tuesday December 31. Crawford M Woods, club president, cites conflicts with the holiday period and merchants unable to arrange merchandising for the event. The December dinner meeting now set for January 0 in Parish hall.

Patrol Station to Headquarters in Troop F Frankl Area

The highway patrol announces a Corty sub station will join Troop F with headquarters at Frankl. Captain J. M. Bender of Williamsport will command the new troop, which will cover Erie Crawford Warren Forest Venango Clarion Jefferson Butler Mercer and Lawrence counties. Northwestern Pennsylvania patrol officer transfers are planned. local sub station staffing and exact establishment date to be announced early next year.

Three Victims Named in Crossing Crash at West Palestine

Three people died in a West Palestine crossing accident when their car was struck by a train. The victims were Rev A L White his wife and their son Allen 19 of Corry Pa. The Whites had conducted revival services in Corry years ago. The minister was a cousin of J Karl Slemmens of Maple Avenue. The crash occurred less than an hour after they left New Brighton Pa en route to relatives. Continued on Page Hight

Justices Ten Get Commissions For Erie County

Erie county authorities learned that commissions will be awarded to thirty five justices of the peace after election, as fears grow they may lose offices for not accepting within thirty days. Only seven of the eleven elected on November 8 qualified, others delayed. Officials appealed to the Secretary of Property and Suppress and the Governor. assurances were received that acceptance time has been extended so all may receive commissions.

Edward N. Jones will remain Pennsylvania's Work Progress Administration administrator despite Gifford Pinchot's protest. President Roosevelt criticized Pinchot's claims as politics with human misery. Pinchot's open letter accused Republicans of withholding support unless they join Democrats. Hopkins aides cited Jones's solid performance in Pennsylvania amid the dispute.

Blind Senator Schall Dies After Auto Crash

Washington December 23 Senator Thomas D Schall a 58 year old blind Republican from Minnesota died after a 55 hour battle following injuries from a Thursday auto crash The driver Lester G Humphries of Hyattsville Md was arraigned today on a manslaughter charge The senator's body awaits funeral arrangements in Hyattsville before a flight to Minneapolis Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery with services at 2:80 p m conducted by Rev Charles Tex Davis</analysis>

Noted Corry Trio Die Amid Local Obits

The community mourns three prominent Corry figures. Porter J. Weber of 209 Palryiew Street, 34, longtime Western Union local manager, died Sunday after a heart attack. Professor William J. Flaherty, 72, renowned violin teacher and orchestra leader, died at Corry Hospital after pneumonia and decline. William C. Schrader, 42, former city mail carrier and World War veteran, passed away at his home after an extended illness. Funeral plans are announced locally.

Johnson given appointment for European unemployment study

Robert L. Johnson, executive director of the Pennsylvania relief board, was named by Gov. George H. Earle as a representative of President Roosevelt for a year studying unemployment problems in Europe. Johnson will resign as Pennsylvania relief administrator on Dec 31 and sail for Europe mid January to assume the new mission, with Gov. Bartle approving the appointment.
