Britain Seeks Mediterranean Support Against Italy

London reports said Britain secured assurances from France Spain Yugoslavia Greece and Turkey to aid if Italy attacks. Harrisburg dispatch reports Robert L. Johnson state relief administrator rebutted Edward N. Jones WPA chief charges as a fairy tale. Jones said denials prepared by Alvin R. Family of Three Killed at Ohio Railroad Crossing

A New Brighton family of three was killed when a Pennsylvania passenger train struck their car at a crossing near East Palestine Ohio. Victims were Rev. J C White 45, his wife 42 and their son Allen 19 a Geneva College student. They had left New Brighton to visit relatives and were en route to Ohio for the weekend. A brother of the minister and superintendent of Girard schools was expected to claim the bodies.

Hauptmann counsel prepares final plea in Christmas eve

Prenton New Jersey December 21 Richard Hauptmann plans to file his final life plea on Christmas eve in the New Jersey court of pardons. His lawyers and wife said he will answer 34 questions on the appeal form from the nine man mercy court evaluating his murder case in the Lindbergh baby death. He promised to complete the task by Monday for transmission Tuesday evening after counsel approval. Hauptmann will spend Christmas alone in his death cell with visitors forbidden.

Legendary Northeast Umpire Charles Rigler Dies in Philadelphia

Charles Rigler a National League baseball umpire from the Northeast and a pioneer of the universal strike signaling system died in Philadelphia. Born May 16 1882 in Massillon Ohio he spent years as a machinist before pursuing umpiring. Rigler officiated in the National League from 1906 until his death with a brief 1923 gap to work on oil land lease development.

Coroner Probes Five Fatalities in East County

County Coroner Dr. W. G. Stroble investigates five deaths this morning. Victims include William Yorsit, 45, a WEA worker, killed when he fell on basement steps at East Twenty First Street. Six Year Feud Ends In Murder In Shaker Heights

In Shaker Heights, Autdalpi Kraemer is dead and neighbor Chestnut wounded after a feud over dogs and hedges turned deadly. The killings occurred as a blizzard arrived, with Mrs Chestnut witnessing Kraemer attack her husband with a snow shovel before Chestnut fired twice. Police found Chestnut on his doorstep with a brain concussion.

Schall’s Condition Reported Improved After Auto Crash

Washington December 21 reports say Sen. Thomas J. Schall Minnesota was struck down by an automobile Thursday and his condition, though still critical, is somewhat more favorable. Physicians released a bulletin noting he remains unconscious most of the time but awakens occasionally.
