Kentucky and LaSalle reach the Kentucky Invitational final after Kentucky edge Utah 70 65 in Lexington. Utah rallied earlier and LaSalle defeated USC 49 38 as Tom Galy led the second half for the Explorers.
960 Department extends lead by three points after Aero Supply League wins over Maintenance and a split with Propellers. Dick West tops scoring with a 216. Mabel Shoppe leads VFW Ladies B League after five games and high 195 by Joan Beardsley. Multiple matches and results across Aero and VFW leagues noted.
Detroit fighter Marty Marshall meets Harold Johnson of Philadelphia in a nationally televised 10 round bout at Olympia Stadium. Johnson, a former KO artist against Satterfield, seeks upset as Marshall makes his TV debut. Promoter Albany Loud keeps option open for a later title clash with Archie Moore.
The mile between John Landy and Roger Bannister at the 1954 British Empire Games in Vancouver captivated 35 000 fans as Bannister edged Landy in 3 58 8 and the four minute mile first. The race was voted the year’s top sports moment by AP writers and broadcasters with many naming Bannister’s Oxford sub four minute feat and the Giants World Series exploits close behind.
In the Oklahoma City event, Tulsa defeated George Washington 61 to 06, San Francisco beat Oklahoma City 75 to 51, Consolation featured Wyoming 52 over Oklahoma A and M 50. Wichita won 91 to 87 against Jouster. UK Invitational first round saw Kentucky 70 over Utah 65 and LaSalle 4 over Southern California.
