Winter Closes Highways With Snow Across Pennsylvania

On winter’s first day cold air brought snow and hazardous driving conditions to parts of the nation. Icy streets snarled traffic in Pennsylvania as frigid Canadian air moved through from the northwest. Wet roads froze below freezing as the cold front passed, leaving some streets icy and others blanketed in snow.

Sparta Man Girl Victims of Assault Reported by State Police

Corry state police seek two men after assaulting a Spartansburg man and attempting to assault his female companion in Rome Township Crawford County near Route 8 in the early morning hours. Eastman drove into a snowbank after an oncoming car forced him off the road. two suspects exited and fought him as another tried to assault the woman. They fled when Eastman and the woman sought help. Police continue the investigation amid winter weather and widespread accidents across Pennsylvania with icy roads and heavy salt use.

Consumer prices hold as food costs fall in November

Washington AP reports November inflation stayed at 0.3 percent as food prices declined for the first time in eight months. Real earnings rose 0.8 percent, and the 12 month CPI gain slowed to 5 percent. Mortgage rates slipped 0.21 percent, while grocery items such as vegetables, pork and dairy led declines.

Family Loses Home In Trailer Fire

The Michael Maine mobile home at R.D. 1 Corry on Welch Hill road was destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon. Neighbors saw the fire in the vacant trailer at 425 and alerted Spartansburg Fire Department, which with two pieces of equipment and seven men responded. Corry sent two pieces of equipment and eight men, but the trailer burned out before arrival. Fire officials believe the origin was in the farmaece area with the back portion engulfed. Firemen spent about 30 minutes on the scene and could save none of the contents. Damages were estimated at 3,000 for the building and 8,000 for contents.

Auditors Give Fire Fund a Clean Bill for Corry

In a brief 30 minute session the Corry City Council heard Meadvill e based Kiebert and Keane audit report on the firemen's pension fund. They gave it a clean bill of health noting two voided checks were discarded and past discrepancies resolved. The council approved Salary Ordinance 1223 for 1977 and granted Civil Service Bureau permission to advertise and conduct a local test for fire truck drivers. City Engineer Johnson said six downtown redevelopment street ordinances may have first readings at the next regular meeting.

Corry Student Recovering From Gym Accident

A Corry Area High School incident left a girl with three broken bones in her left foot after a volleyball standard collapsed from a weight room base. She was treated at Corry Memorial Hospital and discharged home after a week of care with pins and a cast.

Foster Parent Group of 40 Formed Here

Local counselors form a foster parent education group in Corry for about 40 foster parents. Led by Victor Lipinski and Jean Gool, the group meets twice monthly at the 132135 Park Street clinic to discuss common problems, confidentiality, and observer-friendly sessions.
