Rescuers searched Atlantic waters for 17 missing after a chartered Swiss Caravelle jetliner crashed off Madeira near Porto Novo. Nineteen died and 21 survived among 57 aboard, most Swiss tourists on a Christmas vacation. Investigators flew to Madeira to probe possible causes as hospital officials in Funchal treated survivors.
Washington reports Eagle City Oklahoma may lose its money losing post office as new rules allow moratoriums on closings to end. The Eagle City office serves 14 customers and last year took in 708 dollars but cost 11,972 to operate funded by postal rates and taxes. Rural offices have long faced closure pressure despite congressional pressure to maintain service.
State police from Corry and a Lawrence Park fire marshal investigate a Sunday morning arson burglary on Route 89 Amity Township.
