US Rep Joseph P Vigorito told The Journal that a Westway Trading Corp official testified before his House agriculture subcommittee that the companys profits rose 1300 percent since 1972. Walter Cornell said Westway earned seven cents per hundredweight in 1974, up from two cents in 1973 and half a cent in 1972. Cornell also said Westway bought and sold 700000 tons of sugar in 1974, up from 536000 in 1973 and 470000 in 1972, noting Westway is owned by three foreign nationals.
A 61 year old Girard man Howard Shaffer is listed in fair condition at St. Vincent Health Center after being accidentally shot in the hip while hunting in Girard Township. State police say George Phillips fired across I 90 at two doe, wounding Shaffer about 1 pm from a distance of roughly 350 yards. Investigations by state police and Game Protector Russell Meyers will continue.
Erie County officials and AFSCME recessed negotiations at noon and plan to resume Saturday. A state job evaluation study, just completed, is not yet ready for distribution and is pivotal to the economic package. The county offered $550 for a one year contract while union seeks over $1,000 per employee. James Casey, chief negotiator, called early sessions compatible.
