The tugboat The Little One sank in the Illinois River near Peoria leaving only the pilot house visible. Captain Leslie Doyle, 44, and first mate Jerry Strahan, 32, leaped onto an ice flow and were rescued. The tug was en route to Chicago when the incident occurred.
An American engineer John W. Butenko and Russian chauffeur Igor Ivanov were sentenced to long terms for conspiring to spy for Russia. Butenko got 30 years on espionage plus two five year terms, Ivanov 20 years on espionage plus five years concurrently. Both condemned for failing to register as foreign agents.
