Chicago Fire Commissioner cites delay and street address mixups as direct causes of the Our Lady of the Angels School fire deaths. He says early firefighting could have saved lives and notes three people inside the building delayed alerting others.
In San Diego the 16-year-old runaway Carl Eder confessed to killing Lois Pendergast and her four children after being befriended by Thomas Pendergast. He said he angered over noise from Diane, 4, and shot the mother then the girl. He later cried and apologized.
North Corry Council approved a zoning change sought by Philip Zalzneck to convert part of his North Corry property north of Pine Grove Cemetery from Class D residential to industrial use. The plan allows a cement block plant away from North Center street with warehouses offices or loading allowed within 25 feet of the Pine Grove property. The Planning Board approved the arrangement and no protests were filed at last night’s meeting.
Wanda Sue Hardy of Vine Grove died at 16 after a life under 20 pounds. She stayed 40 inches tall and weighed 14 pounds at death, stricken by whooping cough as an infant. She went blind in one eye and stopped gaining weight by age 3, yet enjoyed life and a doll house built by her father. The case prompted medical remarks on possible congenital defects or brain vessel issues. Her illness strained her parents emotionally and financially, with her mother’s nervous breakdown and her father selling the family home to fund care.

A Baltimore and Ohio Railroad engineer Joseph Dunkle 55 of New Castle died after a heat attack in Hazelwood yards. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Mercy Hospital.
Ohio authorities investigated a deer theft after Boyd Whitman reported shooting a deer near Titusville and leaving it untagged while a small truck with Ohio plates allegedly took the animal from a tree limb. Police pursued, but the pursuing vehicle bogged in snow and the lead vehicle vanished. The case centers on unlawful possession of game without proper tagging.
Greenville borough council voted to eliminate the 10 percent amusement tax that had been in effect since 1952. A Corry mother aged 19 and her 4 month old son Jeffery were admitted to Hamel Hospital Erie in critical condition after a three car crash ten miles south of Erie. Also injured were Donald Whitchitt 34 Erie and John Kibbe random, along with Whitehill another Erie resident, Edward Smouse 31 and Walter Good 32. Erie Ambulance Service ferried several victims to hospital and others were picked up by motorists.
Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev launched a bitter new assault on the Malenkov Molotov antiparty group at a Central Committee meeting. Tass said the speech offered no clear penalties for the five former leaders now in obscure posts and made no mention of Gen. Ivan Serov. Khrushchev accused Malenkov Molotov and allies of stifling the drive to match the United States in per capita livestock production and opposing the givin lands project.

Domad FP Gray, 27, of RD 4 Cantecuille, was grazed by a rifle bullet while driving west on the Teilerville Little Cooley road. The slug pierced the convertible top but missed his head by a fraction of an inch, causing a two inch wound. Police and game officials investigated but found no shooter.
