Workmen debate best method to remove wheelless freight cars from the Erie Railroad derailment east of Columbus. A 200 ton crane waits to move in as fires burn in the wreck area to keep workers warm. Signal lights were knocked out during the incident.
A 12 car Erie Railroad derailment east of Columbus halted freight traffic after a journal box axle failed on a eastbound car. About 1,000 feet of track and rails were damaged as crews from Cambridge Springs Meadville Jamestown and Salamanca worked in frigid conditions to clear the line. Two major passenger trains were held at Pennsylvania Railroad stations while work continued and one main line was expected to reopen later today.
President Eisenhower pitches a 1959 budget near eighty billion dollars to GOP leaders in Washington. He aims to curb spending amid a swelling defense bill and a projected national deficit as Democrats pledge progressive action to boost the economy.
A 2 year old Spartansburg area boy is in fair condition at Corry Memorial Hospital after falling into a bucket of hot water. He sustained second degree burns over about 40 percent of his body. The incident occurred around 3 30 Saturday morning when he backed into the bucket as his mother prepared to mop.

Josep Favevane, factory manager at Raymond plant of Associated Spring Corp, named general manager of the Puerto Rico subsidiary. E W Feldt says Favevane will replace Leon Anderson, who has led the plant since its opening a year ago and will return to the mainland in another role. The Puerto Rico operation near San Juan employs about 30 people.

Temperatures stay well below freezing in many areas from the Great Lakes to the Southeast, with readings as low as 10 below zero and subzero in Fayetteville Arkansas and New Orleans 3. Richard G. Corden of East Providence Rhode Island, a 21 man Korean War turncoat and organizer, is reported ready to return home after nearly five years in exile in Red China. Red Cross sources say he may reach the Hong Kong border Friday, but officials in Hong Kong and at the U.S. consulate have not confirmed the report.

About 7 000 of 350 000 special and less deer hunting permits remained unused with most permits in Allegheny Chester Crawford Delaware Erie Pulaski Greene Lawrence Montour and Susquehanna counties.
Latrobe man Kuhn died Saturday when his rifle discharged as he was exiting his car to hunt about five miles from Pleasant Valley. No others were harmed.
Two boys, Harold Melvick aged 10 and Harry Hicks aged 4, were struck by a 1950 Chevrolet driven by Albert J. Bunting 32 of Pittsfield while shoveling snow on Route 61009 known as Nichols Hill, eight miles east of Spartansburg. They were taken to Cony Memorial Hospital. Melvick’s left leg fractured, Hicks bruised. Police report the vehicle skidded on a wet pavement and lacked chains.
During a nine hour roadside check west of Corry, four hunters were fined on the spot totaling 145 dollars. Deputy Game Protector Eimer Simpson issued a 25 dollar fine for taking home an untagged deer, two Ohio hunters paid 50 dollars each for hunting on borrowed licenses, and a Pennsylvania hunter paid 20 dollars for the same offense. Officers logged 850 cars checked with about 9 500 man hours and few infractions noted, making this one of the lightest enforcement nights.
