A Harrisburg AP report states a Wertzville area fire killed a mother and six of her children. The father and two other children were injured and hospitalized, one child escaped to neighbors. Fire Chief Charles J. Shank Jr. identified the victims as the Walker family.

A Reynoldsville driver escaped injury when his auto skidded about 11 am yesterday three miles west of Union City and struck a guard post. Johnny Charles Thomas, 88, a barrel chested star of opera, concert stage and radio, died at his home Tuesday after months with intestinal cancer. He had retired after 1953 but remained in demand for concert appearances. He and his wife Dorothy lived in a desert community north of Lisbon.
