A ninth floor trash chute fire at Hartford Hospital in MaNTPORD Conn. traps more than 100 patients and staff as flames race along ceilings. Investigators probe cigarette or gas causes. one doctor reports flames from the ceiling while others recall a blown torch of fire. Dr Norman Hedenstad dies attempting to seal a door. 793 patients were in the hospital at the time.
Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev tells World Federation of Trade Unions delegates in Moscow that the USSR has built 50 and 100 megaton bombs to deter the West but has no plans to use them unless a new war is begun. Route 6 bypass around Corry aims to secure rights of way within a year. Harold Gahagen, Franklin district highway engineer, said work start and contract timing are uncertain. The bypass would begin at Columbus avenue and North Center street, run west then south to a point beyond a mile from Route 6, connecting near the State Fish Hatchery Curve, with no major private property hurdles anticipated. It would pass through fish hatchery grounds on the north side and avoid disrupting the hatchery core area on the south side.
A Tonawanda man was killed early today when his sports car veered off a road and plunged into a ravine. The victim is identified as Rich J. Insalaco, 21. Police and investigators are at the scene as details remain unclear.
London AP reports Britain mobilized security around U S air bases to deter antinuclear demonstrators led by Earl Bertrand Russell. Five activists were seized and charged under the Official Secrets Act with attempting to enter bases. bail set at 560 dollars each. Demonstrations were planned at Wethersfield Brize Norton and Oxfordshire plus Bristol Cardiff York and Rushlip quarters.
An elderly Oil City man Charles J. Clifford aged 70 died seven hours after a one car crash in Hydetown while his wife Helen J. Clifford 58 was driving toward Erie on Route 8. The crash severely injured Clifford and he died at Titusville Hospital. The accident occurred near Hydetown injuring the couple. Coroner Dr C M Sonne ruled accidental death. The wife sustained minor injuries and was discharged. Damage to the sedan was estimated at $1000. This marked Hydetown's first traffic fatality in four years.
Rep. Al Ullman of Oregon was injured in a freak car accident on Virginia 277. Police say a door swung open and caused the car to swerve, throwing Ullman from the vehicle. Doctors at Winchester Memorial Hospital amputated part of his left leg at the knee.
Fidel Castro in a midnight TV speech railed against Panama and Colombia and accused them of aiding U.S. policy against workers. He challenged severing relations, condemned Kennedy's Venezuela Colombia trip as backing a traitor and urged Latin American neighbors to accept U.S. wishes on Cuba. Eleven Western Hemisphere nations have cut ties with Cuba.
An Ohio hunter, William Gail Newell, 56, of Galion, was fatally shot near Oil City in Cranberry Township at about 4 50 p m on a hunting trip. Official says the shooting appears probably accidental as Newell may have been mistaken for a deer. the shooter’s identity is not yet known. His brother Earl was present.
Miami AP report says Mate Ivanov, wanted in Mineola NY bayonet massacre, swallowed at least one spoon while awaiting transfer. Doctors monitor X rays to see if he passes it. he is confined in a psychiatric ward and not deemed dangerous by mental hospital staff.
A southbound Pennsylvania freight derailment near Spartansburg blocked a Main Street crossing for about 12 hours yesterday. No injuries were reported though two pusher locomotives and a caboose left the tracks. Weather and ice were suspected factors. The incident prompted Sparta merged schools to close and disrupted bus routes, with crew listed as conductor R Ault and engineer W Acklin.
Corry Post Office reports busy season as Santa letters to the North Pole are returned to parents when missing return addresses. Spokesman notes many letters go to dead letter office though some charitable groups collect them. Post Office has returned about six Santa letters recently amid fading belief in Santa.
Washington officials say Reservists and National Guardsmen can return to civilian life once regular units are established to take their places. No firm schedule for releasing 119,000 Guardsmen and Reservists is set, with training centers starting to supply first manpower reinforcements next month. Army experts cite a five month training minimum and ongoing factors like enlistment rates and world tensions, notably the Berlin crisis. The Army aims to release all Guardsmen and Reservists from active duty by next July, but no start date is decided.
Their Ads Get Results notes auto dealer George Pattison described two automobiles as steal in an advertisement. Both cars were later stolen and recovered by police, according to the dealer and police report.
Thom as M Barclay 25 of Oil City turned over to Allegheny County detectives on charges of passing worthless checks and impersonating a police officer. He wore a trooper style hat blouse and a holster with a missing pistol while passing checks up to $1,000, admitting to some forgeries in two months. He bought a police hat and a police house with a bad check and claimed to be a Pittsburgh officer. He was arrested on Route 30 in North Versailles Township after sightings of a phony officer.
