Smoking-Hong Cancer Link Contested at AMA Meeting
Researchers presented anatomical evidence linking abnormal lung tissue changes and cigarette smoking to lung cancer, but the Tobacco Research Committee challenged the findings. Dr. Auerbach and colleagues argued smoking is a major factor, citing a VA study of 17,597 lung tissue samples from 402 men with 63 lung cancer deaths, all smokers. The committee’s Dr. Hockett noted the observations had been publicized earlier and supported by many pathologists.
