Lt Col George M Sauer deputy commissioner of state police since April will retire January 15 at age 39 after a 11 year career with the force. He announced the decision yesterday saying he has no particular retirement plans at present.

The policy passed by a 64 vote of the Public Aid Commission follows public hearings with broad support from Protestants and Jews but Catholic opposition. Officials estimate about 50 000 unmarried or childless mothers could be affected as part of relief program changes. PAC notes potential annual relief cost reductions but faces opposition citing moral concerns.

Corry's Civil Defense unit completes plans for an open house at 7 p m tomorrow at 246 East Main Street second floor of the former Dairymen's League building. Visitors will see police rescue first aid and communications equipment and learn the unit's role in the community. The unit has 65 members with 35 possible on call. the police section has 25. the radio communications group has 18.

If improvement continues, he could take part in two major Vatican ceremonies this week: the closing phase of the Roman Catholic Ecumenical Council on Saturday and a canonization ceremony on Sunday.
