Desegregation of southern schools began smoothly as thousands of Negro students joined white pupils on the first day after the Civil Rights Act. In Mansfield Texas about 70 Negro juniors and seniors attended desegregated classes with no trouble. Several other districts opened, and near 900 Negroes moved to previously white schools in Barnwell and elsewhere in South Carolina.
