Local dealer advertises a sale on 9 Mon at 1st Main and 612, listing Early n Suite, dinette sets, chairs and gowns with prices like 129.95 and 84.89. The ad mentions a 110 road, 6 rooms, hardwood floors, air furnace system, and a 3130 address with tilt ins and family room items available.
President Johnson called steel negotiators to the White House to resume talks and avert a nationwide strike set for midnight tomorrow. Bill Moyers said the aim is to bargain until a settlement is reached as executives and union leaders flies in from Pittsburgh. Johnson also announced Lawrence O Brien will replace John A Gronouski as postmaster general.
Two weekend crashes on Route 6 west of Corry involved out of town drivers. Arthur Johnson and Floyd Burrows, both injured, were taken to Corry Memorial Hospital then Hamot in Erie. A second crash near the same area hurt Cora Luke and three other relatives. all treated and released or listed in satisfactory condition.

U S B52 bombers hit suspected Viet Cong positions in two weekend raids in South Viet Nam. A US pilot in an F105 Thun derchief was downed near Hanoi with the crew member missing. Marine elements reported killing an estimated 10 Viet Cong and wounding 8 in ongoing fighting near Saigon.
John F. McShane named executive assistant for Ajax Iron Works division of The Cooper-Bessemer Corporation. Announcement by Lloyd N. Lanphere cites budget controls market development and long range planning as duties starting September 15. McShane joined Cooper-Bessemer in 1954 and has served as capital investments coordinator since 1965.
Doctors began testing L. Gordon Cooper and Charles Conrad at Houston’s Manned Space Center while space officials voiced confidence they have qualified for an eight day moon mission. Aboard the USS Lake Champlain they showed no symptoms and will undergo weeks of examinations before a 400 mile trip to isolation.

The mission extended U S lead in man hours in space to 639 hours 48 minutes against 507 hours 16 minutes for the Soviet Union.
