Conclave Opens as Vatican Security Tightens and Cardinals Gather
Rome reports the Sacred College convening after Pope Pius X funeral rites. Fifty-seven cardinals including O'Connell and Gibbons attend as Vatican precincts are fortified. The conclave processional setup and ballot procedures are described, with smoke signals guiding Rome’s watchers. The narrative notes a London dispatch about pro German sentiment in the Netherlands amid reports of violence and devastation.
